IGNOU is a pioneer in Distance Education system. It was established to democratise higher education. The aim of IGNOU is to provide cost-effective quality education to large sections of our population including those in remote and farflung areas. The University follows a learner-Centric approach and has successfully adopted a policy of openness and flexibility in terms of relaxed entry qualifications, durations, pace and place required for successful completion of a programme.

The academic programmes of the University have multiple-media support. The University has state of art facilities for the production of audio/ video programmes. It also uses interactive radio counseling as well as tele-conferening to provide interactivity in the teaching-learning process. It has been running a 24 hour educational T.V. channel GYAN DARSHAN.
